The Day When Products Disappear from Store Shelves
Value Exchange Security in a Digital Twin Society
A Vision of 205X
In 205X, physical products will disappear from store shelves.
People will purchase products that are no longer physically present, paying for what appears to be only a "volume of air."
However, this does not mean that products no longer exist.
In future stores, all products will be presented as three-dimensional images generated by advanced spatial imaging technologies. Customers will be able to experience products through haptic presentation technologies, feeling textures, shapes, and usability.
They will be able to sit on a virtual sofa, experience the comfort of a bed, or examine the usability of products as if they were physically present.
Nevertheless, the products themselves will not exist at the store location. Customers will interact with spatially presented information and haptic sensations, while the actual products will be stored elsewhere and delivered after purchase.
This future shopping experience creates a new challenge:
How can we guarantee trust in transactions when payment and product delivery occur at different times and locations?
The Fusion of Physical and Cyber Shopping Experiences
Current online shopping systems have the advantage of unlimited virtual store space, allowing customers to choose from an enormous variety of products.
On the other hand, physical stores provide valuable experiences that online shopping cannot easily reproduce, such as seeing, touching, and physically experiencing products.
In a future digital twin society, where cyber and physical spaces are seamlessly integrated, these two advantages can be combined.
Customers will be able to experience countless products through spatial displays while physically standing inside a real store.
The boundary between physical shopping and online shopping will disappear.
A New Challenge: Trustworthy Value Exchange
This future society introduces a fundamental problem.
When customers purchase products, they may need to pay before receiving the actual goods.
For sellers, advance payment eliminates financial risk.
However, for customers, a new uncertainty emerges:
"Will the product really be delivered after payment?"
This problem already exists in current forms of remote commerce, including:
- online shopping,
- catalog sales,
- consumer-to-consumer marketplaces,
- digital commerce platforms.
Modern transactions often involve multiple parties, including sellers, buyers, payment systems, and delivery companies.
As the number of participants increases, transaction structures become more complex, and ensuring trust becomes increasingly important.
Research Concept
This research aims to establish a secure product exchange system for future digital twin societies.
By applying digital currency technologies and electronic bond mechanisms, we propose a system that maintains equivalent value exchange between products and payments throughout the entire transaction process.
The proposed system enables secure transactions involving multiple participants, including:
- sellers,
- buyers,
- delivery providers,
- and other third parties.
The technology can be applied not only to future spatial commerce but also to existing systems such as:
- online shopping,
- catalog sales,
- virtual stores in the metaverse,
- and other digital commerce environments.
Research Objectives
This research focuses on the development of the following technologies:
- Development of an electronic bond management system using digital currency technologies
- Development of transaction management technologies connected with existing sales and delivery infrastructures
- Development of support technologies that enhance security during product delivery and reception
- Development of an electronic bond exchange mechanism
- Establishment of a secure value exchange framework among buyers, sellers, and delivery providers
Concept of Electronic Bonds
Electronic Bond ①
Seller-Oriented Value Guarantee
Electronic Bond ① guarantees equivalent value exchange between payment and product shipment.
Functions:
- The electronic value is equivalent to the purchased product value.
- Transfer is restricted to the seller.
- Transfer restrictions remain active until the scheduled shipping date.
- After the restriction period, the bond can be transferred or converted freely.
Electronic Bond ②
Delivery-Oriented Value Guarantee
Electronic Bond ② guarantees equivalent value exchange until the buyer receives the product.
Functions:
- The electronic value is equivalent to the purchased product value.
- Transfer is restricted to the delivery provider.
- Transfer restrictions remain active until the scheduled arrival date.
- After the restriction period, the bond can be transferred or converted freely.
Electronic Bond Exchange System
The proposed exchange system enables automatic exchange between Electronic Bond ① and Electronic Bond ②.
Functions:
- The delivery provider can issue Electronic Bond ② directly to the buyer without requiring seller involvement.
- When the buyer receives Electronic Bond ②, Electronic Bond ① is automatically collected and exchanged.
- The delivery provider can transfer the corresponding electronic value to the seller without additional intermediary processes.
Through this mechanism, value equivalence is maintained throughout:
purchase → shipment → delivery → receipt
LUMIAS Perspective
Future digital twin societies will require more than advanced imaging and interaction technologies.
A sustainable future information society also requires secure mechanisms for exchanging:
- information,
- physical goods,
- digital assets,
- and economic value.
This research explores a new foundation for trustworthy value exchange in future spatial commerce enabled by next-generation imaging and interaction technologies.
LUMIAS explores future social systems and research concepts enabled by next-generation imaging and interaction technologies, while LUCIAS focuses on developing the underlying technologies themselves.
LUMIAS Perspective
